Much to the dismay of her fans, the “Barbz,” Nicki Minaj announced today during a livestream that she would be pushing back the release of her fourth studio album, Queen.
Nicki recently revealed the original release date of the album during a red carpet appearance at the Met Gala on May 7th. She told her fans that the album would be released on June 15th. The reveal came just over a week after the album’s lead single, “Chun Li,” peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 28th.
There are a few speculated reasons why Nicki may have pushed back the album. The first reason is that Young Money label-mate, Drake, is dropping his new album, Scorpion, this June. Both releases during the same month could cause Minaj and Drake to take sales and streams away from one another, causing them to battle each other for chart placements. Another reason is that although, “Chun Li,” made it to the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, the single has not had the same longevity on the chart as her previous lead singles such as, “Super Bass,” “Starships,” or “Anaconda.” The song has already dropped to number 29 on the chart, meaning that it would most likely have fallen out of the top 40 by the original Queen release date of June 15th. The decreased level of radio airplay for the song would make it hard for Minaj to promote the album during its release week and achieve the same commercial success of her last album, The Pinkprint. Nicki may be trying to cook up a longer lasting hit before she drops the album.
During the announcement, Nicki told fans that she is excited about releasing her 2nd single in the near future and that she may reveal Queen‘s cover art along with two other surprises between June 11th and June 15th. She then dismally told her fans the new release date of the album, saying, “But the album itself, I think I want to put out on August 10th.” She went on to discuss her plans for launching an official countdown to the album, as well as bringing a select group of fans into the studio for a private listening session. Later today, she confirmed the new release date on Twitter:
